Jackson Demonstration State Forest is the largest state-owned forest in California and comprises 50,000 magical acres including old-growth redwood, river passages, beautiful waterfalls, and a plethora of wildlife. In the season, this is a great place to go mushrooming — with a permit. There are many bike and hiking trails.
