Alsace and Beyond…

It’s right about in the middle of February when thoughts start to turn to the spring days that are surely not too far ahead. If you’re tired of the cold, damp and grey, then jump in the car and head to gloriously beautiful Anderson Valley for a weekend that’s sure to perk you up! Formerly known as the International Alsace Varietals Festival, the Winter White Wine weekend extravaganza is a recipe for curing the mid-winter blues.

Riesling for breakfast? Why not, we say! Start off Saturday February 22 with a toast to one of our favorite grapes with a “Why Riesling?” interactive morning seminar that will highlight the many styles of this exciting, cool-weather grape and includes wine tasting and mouth-watering food pairings.

Fashioned like a European-style winter market, the Grand Tasting on Saturday February 22 features more than 30 wineries pouring a dazzling array of white wines with an emphasis on the Alsace varietals that shine in Anderson Valley’s climate: Riesling, Pinot Gris, and Gewürztraminer. Don’t miss the Chardonnays and sparklers as well! Browse hand-crafted goods offered for sale by a select group of local artisans and craftsman and enjoy delicious seasonal small bites from local chefs. Live music adds the red bow to tie it all together! Note: the wineries listed here are just some of the participants in the Grand Tasting and other events.

Spend Sunday winding your way to the many open houses at tasting rooms dotted throughout the valley. Check out our Highway 128 Wine Road for ideas of where to stop.

You Might Ask…Why White Wine Matters

And Anderson Valley Winegrowers is happy to tell you!

  • Versatility in the glass and on the table. The range of white wine styles is astounding. From light and crisp to full and
luscious, whites run the gamut and provide styles for every type of taste, mood and meal.
  • White wine is a gateway drug. Most people start their wine consumption with more fruit forward white wines, slowly
graduating to more nuanced styles. And for that we are thankful.
  • Acid abounds. Whether you are an acid freak or not, you have to admire white wine’s ability to use that acid to its
advantage – either to be sleek and sexy on its own, perhaps for pairing purposes, or even cultivating ageability.
  • White wine remains the better bargain. With all the great wine options available, white wine is still usually the
cheaper option on the shelf so stock that cellar and enjoy it on a more frequent basis.
